The local news is obsessed with what they call “firebugs.” Arson is a hobby in this city. Particularly hot times are the night before Halloween, known as Devil’s Night, and the summer months. Each spring, the news will report, “The firebugs are out early this year.” A few years ago we garnered national attention with an impressive thirty arsons in one night, and a total of 45 arsons over a two-day period. Now: we try to board up the empty houses and we mark them with yellow “Arson Watch” signs. On Devil’s Night, packs of citizens walk the streets in hope of preventing more fires.
