by N.T. Chambers
There are
no snowmen
in the desert
where life is
seldom frozen ...
just stoic cacti and
grumpy javelinas
longing for
a warmer sun
to hasten
the blooming
of prickly pear flowers –
delicacies of their
simple dreams ...
desert wrens
turn every
scattered pebble
hoping to find
a wayward ant
overlooked seed
or careless spider
too far from its nest ...
above it all
Cooper hawks
tirelessly patrol
both sky and ground
for mistaken doves
who left the safety
of city buildings
seeking promises
of endless flight
only to find
perilous skies.
